Atmospheric Wedding Lighting

Highlands,
NC

At 4,100 feet on the Blue Ridge Escarpment, Highlands occupies a world apart — the finest venues here are small, unhurried, and built for the kind of light that feels like permission to exhale.

The Approach

Light that transforms
Highlands venues.

Highlands, North Carolina is among the most exclusive wedding destinations in the Southeast — a small plateau town on the Nantahala National Forest boundary where the combination of elevation, remoteness, and a long tradition of affluent summer residence has produced a concentration of remarkable venues in a very small geography. The spaces here are intimate by design: stone manor houses, timber-frame lodge rooms, private estate pavilions. Warm white lighting in these settings should feel as though it has always been there — unhurried, unobtrusive, and entirely in keeping with the place's character.

The Highlands-Cashiers plateau draws couples willing to travel for an experience that cannot be replicated closer to home. The venues are almost universally high-end and small-format, which means the lighting design must operate with restraint and precision — a single misplaced fixture reads as clumsy in these rooms in a way it would not in a 400-person ballroom.

Wedding lighting atmosphere

“The room your guests walk into sets the tone for every moment that follows. That’s not decor. That’s light.”

Dan's Events / Lighting

i

One palette.

Warm white and white only. Restraint is what reads as elegant in the room — and timeless in every photograph.

ii

Every face.

Warm light is universally flattering. Guests, gowns, flowers, skin — everything looks its best under our design.

iii

Every frame.

Your photographer is only as good as the light we leave them. We give them a room already worth shooting.

Favorite Venues

Our favorite
Highlands venues.

Every space has its own character. I design the light to match — not override — what the venue already offers.

01

The Farm at Old Edwards

Highlands, NC

A restored 1900s barn on the Old Edwards Inn campus with antique timber, a stone fireplace, and a warmth of material that warm white lighting brings forward with extraordinary fidelity.

02

Old Edwards Inn

Highlands, NC

A luxury mountain inn with formal dining rooms, garden terraces, and stone-faced event spaces — the stone and timber throughout respond to warm uplighting with a quality that feels earned rather than applied.

03

Highlands Country Club

Highlands, NC

A historic mountain club with vaulted wood-paneled reception rooms and stone terraces — warm lighting in the paneled rooms creates a depth that makes the architecture read as more refined, not merely older.

04

Skyline Lodge

Highlands, NC

A mid-century stone-and-timber lodge with panoramic plateau views and intimate reception rooms — the heavy stone construction and narrow proportions make this one of the most atmospheric lighting environments I work in.

05

The Bascom

Highlands, NC

A contemporary arts campus with Cor-Ten steel, glass, and clean concrete surfaces that respond to warm white lighting in a way opposite to stone — the effect is precise, modern, and quietly dramatic.

Questions about lighting
in Highlands

How far is Highlands from Asheville?

Highlands is approximately 90 minutes from Asheville via US-64 through Brevard. The distance warrants a travel supplement that I quote as a fixed fee with every Highlands proposal.

Highlands venues are small and intimate — does lighting still matter at that scale?

It matters more. In a 40-foot room, a light placed poorly is immediately visible. The intimacy of Highlands venues demands a level of precision in fixture placement, color temperature calibration, and intensity control that is simply not required in larger spaces. The reward for getting it right is a room that feels genuinely considered rather than merely lit.

Can you work within the aesthetic constraints of a historic Highlands property?

I design with the property's existing character as the foundation. Historic stone and timber properties often have restrictions on mounting methods, and I work entirely within those constraints — using freestanding fixtures, furniture placement, and natural weight anchoring rather than adhesives or penetrations. The result is an installation that respects the architecture completely.
